Vision and Mission

Our vision is to impact the City of Schenectady with the Love of God by teaching and preaching the Word of God in season and out of season. No excuses! The mission is to teach and preach with a sense of urgency that creates an atmosphere in Hamilton Hill where all are welcome to seek and establish a relationship with God.  Bethel is the beacon of light that shines in the community where children can be children and the community can be a church of action that shows concern for our Brothers and Sisters. Bethel is the church of refuge where everybody is somebody for we know that “if God is for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31).

Our History

In March 1952, on Hullet Street, Mrs. Catherine O’Neal, Mr. Coleman O’Neal and a group of citizen from the City of Schenectady founded Nichols Chapel as an African Methodist Episcopal Church. The name of Nichols Chapel was later changed to Bethel AME Church after Mother Bethel in Philadelphia, PA. On June 21, 1952 the Right Reverend D. Ward Nichols, the Presiding Bishop of the First Episcopal District appointed Brother R.N. Christian to become the first pastor of Bethel. Bethel AME of Schenectady would later move to the Hamilton Hill area, it’s current location at 540 Mumford Street.
